- Recycling 1 tonne of paper saves, on average, up to 17 trees and prevents air and water pollution.
- The 17 trees saved (above) can absorb a total of 113.6 Kg of carbon dioxide from the air each year. Burning that same tonne of paper would create 681.8 Kg of carbon dioxide.
- Every tree provides oxygen enough for 3 people to breathe.
- Recycling 1 tonne of paper saves 4.2 MWh or enough energy to power a computer for almost one year.
- For every tonne of paper shredded:
17 trees are saved 16000 litres of water are saved 4.2 MWh of electricity is saved 2.42 cubic meters of landfill space is saved - The construction costs of a paper mill designed to use waste paper is 50 to 80% less than the cost of a mill using new pulp
- Trees play a vital role in the earth's ecosystem. They absorb carbon dioxide, trap rainwater and moisture, stabilize soil, control avalanches, protect coastal areas, and perform other functions.
- Trees are being cut down at an alarming rate. Experts say to make up for the loss of trees in the past decade, some 130 million hectares - the size of Peru - would need to be planted with some 140 billion trees over a 10-year period.
